2022 is here, a new year lies ahead of us and signals a fresh start full of hope and promise.
Which, let’s be honest, after the last couple of years - we need it!
Whether you subscribe to the idea of New Year’s Resolutions or not, for many, the start of a new year is simply an opportunity to take stock, re-evaluate and set intentions for the year ahead. Whether your focus is on your health, fitness, relationships, or career, it can be helpful to take some time to consider your goals and where you’d like to be in 12 months from now.
GOAL SETTING - WHY?
Perhaps you’re already goal-orientated and love the idea of always having something to work towards, or maybe you’re more of a ‘go with the flow' kind of person.
If you’re the former, it’s important to remember to enjoy the journey too – life isn’t a race.
If you are more of the latter, then consider whether giving yourself some structure might help focus your attention and steer you towards what you really want in life.
Either way, having a set goal to work towards makes it MUCH more likely to happen. They don't have to mean huge lifestyle changes either, one small change could just be the catalyst you need!
SMART GOALS
It can be helpful to use the ‘SMART’ acronym when it comes to goal setting:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
Essentially, the key to success is through setting goals that are clear, realistic, and achievable within a defined time frame.
So, for example, instead of 'I'm going to start running', you'd say 'I'm going to run for 15 minutes - 3 times a week for 3 months' or 'By July, I'd like to be able to run 5k within 30 minutes'.
STAY MOTIVATED
It’s easy to get carried away - particularly at this time of year - and focus on an end outcome that requires huge changes or will take a long time to achieve. Consider starting small and setting mini-milestones along the way. Promise yourself a reward each time you hit one to help keep you positive, motivated, and striving for that next step.
ENLIST SUPPORT
Tell your family, friends, and colleagues about your goals and let them know how they can best support you. The more people that know, the better – the extra accountability will help you stay on track.
KEEP A JOURNAL
Keeping a journal or diary tracking your process can be a really helpful way to remain focused and not lose sight of your aim. Incorporating this practice into your daily routine, like just before you go to bed, is also a great way to foster a positive mindset. Note down something every day that you've achieved or that you're grateful for, however small.
SETBACK
Setbacks are inevitable and part of the process. Don’t be hard on yourself, you can re-set whenever you choose. Notice what pulls your attention away and identify what you can do differently next time. It’s all a learning process.
Whatever your goals for 2022 all of us at Ambitions Personnel wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2022.
